Nancy Folbre, in this presentation for the Stone Center’s 2020 “Inequality by the Numbers” virtual workshop, synthesizes theoretical and empirical analyses of care work, focusing on the causes and consequences of multiple penalties faced by care workers. She integrates reflections on the coronavirus pandemic, and considers the interconnectedness of care workers and essential workers. Folbre directs the Program on Gender and Care Work and is a professor emerita at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
